There was abuse in my family, but it was mostly musical in nature.
- A Mighty Wind (2003)

Here are my picks for the Oscars later tonight. I went with a couple of “upsets”, and think that the academy may realize that this was a role of a lifetime for Murray. I also think that Cold Mountain will fall flat, which leaves Renee out in the cold.

In the first of two Oscar prep post, I have decided to post who would be nominated, and who would win if it were all up to me. I will not include some categories (like short film) since I haven't seen enough to really be fair on this.

Subject:The Stank
Time:5:56 pm.
Mood: refreshed.
Well it's fucking Monday afternoon, you should get out of bed earlier.
- High Fidelity (2000)

I hate it when I am on campus and I catch a wiff of B.O. I always sit and wonder if I am the on that reeks, or if it is one of the numerous, and I mean numerous, people at the U that don’t shower.

BTW, if in Mpls, go check out the Station Agent at St. Anthony. It’s gone after tomorrow.

Subject:Hegemony
Time:1:22 pm.
Mood: stressed.
Nobody knows anything, Joe. We'll take this leap, and we'll see. We'll jump, and we'll see. That's life, right?
- Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)

Which group would you prefer to be in?

Would you rather be a part of a society that is uniform, in which everyone no matter race, religion or sexual preference are members of the hegemony? In this society there would be no differences between individuals while growing up. This society would be about uniformity, and equal opportunities for development no matter what your cast is.

Would You rather be a part of a society that is diverse, in which people are viewed as equals, but individual differences can still impact a remembers development? In this society there would be separate cultures per community, each representing, and praising differences of race and ethnicity. Though there are differences, all mememers of this culture would be viewed as equals in the eyes of the hegemony.

Hey? Lip them? Lip them? What?
- Lost In Translation (2003)

Lem asked me if I had ever written my reasons for liking Lost In Translation so much, and I really hadn’t. I had thought about what I enjoyed of the film, and had considered just writing a list of things for Lem, but instead, I wrote what’s below. I hope it adds some insight for you Lem, and if you haven’t seen the film I’d recommend against reading my “reading” of the film.

You might want to try believing in something bigger than yourself. It might cheer you up.
- American Splendor (2003)

I’ve had people ask me what I thought the best film from last year was. Really most of the questions came near the end of the year, but I hadn’t seen enough of the Christmas films to make the list. I have created the following two lists, one is my list of the ten best films I saw from 2003. These films are remarkable achievements, wondrous works and amazing in the aspects of cinema. The second list is my ten favorite films from 2003. These films are films that affected, impacted and really worked for me. These are the films that I can see myself watching for years and years to come. I should add as a note, that there are four films I have yet to see that may impact this list. Those films are Cold Mountain, Capturing the Friedmans, Spellbound, and The Girl With the Pearl Earring. All of these films come from the Oscar year of 2003 –

She was a charming middle-aged lady with a face like a bucket of mud. I gave her a drink. She was a gal who'd take a drink, if she had to knock you down to get the bottle.
- Murder, My Sweet (1944)

I’m interested to know what music you think I should be listening too. Pay no attention to what I actually listen to, I want you to create a musical identity of me.

You need more than guts to be a good gangster, you need ideas.
- City of God (2002)

There are times, and these times are getting more and more frequent, that I realize how ignorant people are. These realizations comes in many ways, but often are a result of a discussion about something I like/now a lot about. This leads me to the question, are people ignorant or am I just over zealous?

Walter, you're wonderful, in a loathsome sort of way.
- His Girl Friday (1940)

One of my favorite parts of winter is having ice crystals in my beard.

In my first of possibly many Oscar reflections, does anyone else think it’s interesting that ROTK got 11 Oscar nods, but none are for acting.

You understand. Do not feel bad. Americans they do not deserve what they have. They have the eyes of small children who are forever looking for the next source of distraction, entertainment, sweet taste in the mouth. We are not like them. We know rich opportunities when we see them. Do not throw away God's blessing.
- House of Sand and Fog (2003)

When driving around the city, do you ever wonder who voted in the "voted best strip club" elections?

Now no more shenanigans, no more tomfoolery, no more ballyhoo.
- Good Will Hunting (1997)

To say I am ecstatic over the Eagles victory yesterday would really be an understatement. I asked for that pick, and well, I got lucky. I don't think I could have handled the Packers elimiating the Eagles as well as the way they made it into the playoffs. I ran around the basment, screaming and shrieking. I don’t think I came down until… well I don’t know if I have come down yet. I’m excited for the games this weekend.

My Christmas vacation has been almost exactly what I want from it. I haven’t gotten to do everything I was interested in, and I really have a bunch more films I want to see, but at least I’m making progress.

I have two more films to see before I can create my top film list for 2003.

Posers were people who looked like punks but "did it for fashion", they'd say shit like, "anarchy in the UK." What the fuck's that? What good is that to those of us in Utah, America? That's a Sex Pistols thing right? They were British right? They were allowed to go on about Anarchy in the UK. You don't live your life by lyrics.
- SLC Punk! (1999)

So last Thursday I went down to Town Hall to meet up with Evan, Sam and Evan’s college friend Lloyd. We talked about Nam, Music and sports while we shared beers. I didn’t bring a cigar which was an unfortunate moment, but even more unfortunate was that Emily and I had to leave right when we took control of the couches.

I had been putting off going to see the Barbarian Invasions for two weeks. I don’t like going down to Edina Four, but I suppose it’s better than Lagoon. Anyway we pulled in a bit early, and I parked next to a car with a bunch of punk rock bumper stickers including a nice Crass one. It was kind of a funny coincidence, since I was wearing my Crass shirt at the time, and really I don’t see many other Crass fans around town. Anyway I went down to buy my tickets and the kid in the both had a name tag on named Devo. He had spiked up hair, and gave me a look over. I asked for the tickets and gave him my 20 and he just pushed the money back, Emily and I got in for me. He said nothing, and as I explained to Emily, Punk Rockers don’t say shit.

This is the oddest thing I've ever heard of. Let's hope we don't catch it. I'd hate to wake up some morning and find out that you weren't you.
– Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

Sometimes I feel I have a hard time verbalizing my opinions. I spend a lot of time in discussions listening, analyzing and considering other options. I think it puts me at a disadvantage sometimes, mostly due to a passive nature when it comes to belief structure. Tonight was a situation where I felt out of place. Tonight I tried to be more verbal in some of my ideas. I tried to share some things that I might think, I tried to share some of my beliefs, and I think I was successful. There were large amounts of time that I felt uncomfortable, but in the end I need to accept that I feel that way.
